Every big city has main places of interest that become its “visit card”. Eiffel Tower in Paris, Red Square in Moscow, Golden Gates in Kyiv.
Golden Gate is a monument with a centuries-old history. It is not only the symbol of modern Kyiv, but also a proof of Kyivan Rus and princes authenticity, of centuries-old history, of strength and glory of Ukrainian people and state.
GOLDEN GATE HISTORY
The architectural monument Golden Gate is one of the rare objects that survived till present days. Primordially Golden Gate served as a fortificationconstruction that was built in 9th century. Yaroslav the Wise, Prince of Kyiv, was the initiator of its building. It was his plan to make them one of the four fortification gates that surrounded Kyiv and protected it from the invaders. Besides Golden Gate, Sophia, Lviv and Lyadski Gate were constructed. Kyiv also was enclosed with an immense rampart and a ditch.Historians date the building of Golden Gate to 1017-1037 years according to the ancient chronicles.
THE HISTORY OF GOLDEN GATE’S NAME
Why do Golden Gate bear such a name?
Historians claim that it was the golden dome of Blagovist church which was built above the Gate that gave them the name Golden.The church was 12 m high and 6,9 m in width. The inside attire consisted of unique paintings, mosaics and frescoes.The second version admits that Gate take their name after Golden Gate of Constantinople that also served for fortification of the city.
ABOUT GOLDEN GATE
A double-level fighting tower with a passage was a first version of Golden Gate. But very soon two walls and a church with a cross installed at 30 m height were built. The construction was 12 m high, 26 m long and 8 m in width.The facade consisted of brick laying with arches and niches. Gate served not only as a fortification construction, but also as the main entrance to Kyiv. Here princes met quests and ambassadors, princes’ armed force went through it in wartime, est.
Golden Gate were the only gate in Kyiv that had hold the defensive position during the numerous invasions. But in 1240 Khan Batu burst into Ukrainian land and destroyed it.
So, the Gates have remained half ruined from the second half of the 17th century to the middle of 18th century, when they were covered with earth in order to prevent further destruction during the war with Turkey. The new gate were built on their place and the author of project was D.Debosket.
In a hundred of years an architect K. Lokhvitsky conducted the excavations.Consequently, in 1832 the remains of gate (two parallel walls 13 and 25 m long and 8 m high) were found.In order to preserve the ancient monument V. Beretty started to face the walls with brick.
Till 1970 year the clearing works were conducted, but the remains continued to destroy. So, in 1970 the decision on restoration and renewal of Golden Gate in accordance with ancient paintings was taken. By implemented the new project of restoration.
The Grate Golden Gate were opened for 1500th anniversary of the capital. Reconstructed Golden Gate have the primordial shape and mosaic laying on the floor in accordance with design in St. Sophia Cathedral. Inside the monument you can see the remains of the ancient building – 9 m high and 6,4 m in width wall, massive pilasters which hold pier of arches 8,11 and 13m, also the impression of beams, that strengthened the rampartsinside the gate. The facade was built with brick that imitated old times and a small tower.
GOLDEN GATE TODAY
On 23 January 1983 the monument hand over to St. Sophia National Reserve . Also the Grate Kyiv Gate are included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
Inside the monument there is a museum of “Golden Gate” with three-tiers exhibition halls, where you can examine the remains of ancient buildings of Kievan Rus and the guide will tell a lot of interesting facts about it.
Downstairs you will find exhibits that will tell you about the creation and reconstruction of the gate; also it is planned to open an exhibition of weapons, clothing and household items of Kievan Rus on the top two floors. Moreover, you can visit the Blagovist church and look at Kyiv from the observation areas. On the territory of the monument there are thematic exhibitions.
And owing to the good acoustics, the performances and concerts are constantly organized inside the monument. In the near future it is planned to restore and renew the Blagovist church to its original form.
How to find a monument?
It is very easy. It is situated at the intersection of the central streets of Kyiv: Vladimir, Zolotovoritska, Yaroslaviv Val and Lysenko, just near the exit of subway station “Golden Gate”.
