Rybalskyi cable-stayed bridge
It was built to link the Podol highway and Rybalskyi Peninsula. It is the world’s first cable-stayed bridge based on a reinforced concrete beam of stiffness. It has a length of 474.3 m.
Due to its architectural design and construction it has become a very important monument of the 60’s. The bridge is interesting because it has three steps – two of them go down and one goes upstairs. If you climb the ladder that leads to the top, you can find yourself on a kind of a viewing platform overlooking the capital city – Kiev.
Movement of vehicles was stopped over it in the 90’s because of an emergency condition. A little later, under construction extra belay support were brought, and the bridge became a pedestrian. Steel cables have 15 tears, they lost its strength by almost a third, plates failed, and bearing reinforced concrete beam is damaged.
All this caused the final closing of the bridge. In 2009 walking across the bridge was closed and dismantling work started. On the side of the Rybalsky Island a flyover has already been withdrawn. Now there will be built a support for Podolsky Bridge. It opens a very picturesque view of the Postal Square, shipbuilding plant “Lenin’s smithy” Obolon, a river port and Heat Station-2.
The Eliminating of the Rybalskyi cable-stayed bridge started after the opening of movement over Havana bridge, built to replace the liquidated. The plans of the architects to build on the place of Rybalsky Bridge a new bridge letting transport enter the Podolsky Bridge. The office river port will be brought to sacrifice, it will be demolished.
A replacement of Rybalsky Bridge by a new one is connected with construction on the island an office downtown with skyscrapers of Kiev-City. Near the bridge in one of the squares of Rybalsky island there is a relic- the “Destroyer of Zheleznyak” which had survived since the Second World War. Its mast is optionally possible to climb.
