KYIV IS THE CITY OF CHESTNUTS
For the first time the chestnuts were planted in Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and then Kyivans spreaded them all over the city. According to another version the chestnuts were brought to the Balkans in 1842 by the governor-general Bibikov, who decided to surprise the Tsar Nicholay I and planted them on Shevchenko boulevard. Unfortunately, the tsar did not appreciate the endeavour and all chestnut trees were replaced with poplars on the same day. The cut down chestnuts were planted by Kyivans in their courtyards. For the first time the chestnuts appeared on the small emblem of Kyiv in 1969. Since then such an expression as ”Kyiv chestnut” has emerged. Why was a chestnut chosen? The inflorescence of chestnut leaves is not only beautiful, but it is also easy to be drawn. You can see the image of chestnut on the subway tokens and on the boxes of chocolates and cakes.

Anyway, today more than two million of three main chestnut specimen are growing at the territory of our capital. They are: the common buckeye, so called “nude”chestnut and red chestnut. At the Fomin botanical garden territory there are chestnuts of more than 200 years old. And the oldest chestnut ( Petro Mogyla’s chestnut) has been growing for 350 years near the Troitska Church in the middle of the Kitaevska desert. This chestnut is protected by law and was consecrated in 1994 by the father Miroslav.
