In all ages there were enthusiasts, which forces incorporated the most daring ideas and projects. One of such a person was Vladimir Ippolitovich Lipski – a world famous florist, a traveler, a great connoisseur of all the botanical gardens in the world, that later has became a first president of Academy of Science in Ukraine.
The history of the creation the Botanical garden:
In the autumn of 1918 he came up with a brilliant idea to create in the territory of Goloseevski Wood in Kiev the reserved territory and turn it into a botanical garden. Gradually the idea began to grow into the details. And here it is, the drawing plan of the garden is ready, directions of activity are based. Lipski is chosen to be a director of the garden and he starts to work on a detailed plan for the construction and garden creations. Who would thought that the history of the garden will be so dramatic!
Because of political reasons, the plan suffered a complete collapse. In 1928 the Botanical garden invites Academic Lipski to head it. So, he led it almost till his death and he died in 1937. But in spite of this the fact of his involvement in the work on plan of the Kiev Botanical garden allows rightly to consider him as founder and the father of detailed design, that later came into life without his participation.
After Lipski gone to Odessa, the question of the implementation of the project in Kiev raised rapidly by famous botanic and academic Alexander Vasil’evich Fomin (100001869-1935). Due to his efforts, finally the government approved the project. And the year of the start of construction botanical garden on the fatal accident was the last year for a scientist.
During the construction phase and and laying the garden, Lipski carried out the scientific control and consultancy in all questions, and when he died than scientific leadership was head by professor of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute Walter E. Schmidt (100001850-1958). As a director of the garden he was a part-time.
After academician N. N. Grishko was elected to be a director of Institute of Botany, to the position of director of the botanical garden was appointed Ya. K. Gotzik(100001921- 1954). It to him came an idea to raise a question about the botanical garden of having self- organization status. The work in such direction moved with great difficulties, because of the poor financing and problems with removal of some organizations and individuals which occupied two-thirds of the territory of the future garden. But with all difficulties about the beginning of 1941 in the garden were more than a thousand different plants outdoor and almost the same number the hothouse. Only just started to operate a separate Corps of scientific laboratory of leading academics of Kiev: A.O. Sapyegin, M. G. Holodniy, B. M. Lyubimenko. At present time there is new crops department.
When Kiev was occupied by German troops during World War II a large amount of collections was lost. That what remained was saved by women team of Botanical Garden efforts.
Botanical Garden of Grisko’ s Epoch:
Right after the Kiev’s liberation from fascists the garden began intensively build up practically with bare enthusiasm of Kievans . Thought the War was not finished yet. The director f Botanical Garden during that time was Alexey M. Burachinski. In July of 1944 the Garden gets a status of organization with independent financing that since that time was leaded by scientist- botanist, academician N.N. Grishko (100001901-1964).
The first post-war period was marked by a large number of expeditions and trips to restore and replenish the collection of plants. Existing at that time collections were the basis for the formation of activities, the main idea of which was the study of plants and terms of their benefits in the various branches of the national economy.
Its hard to appreciate all the contribution into development of the modern science made by N. N. Grishko and members of his command, mostly veterans. There was created not only the unique by its sizes and the number of plants Botanical Garden, but also the idea that got incarnation to combine research purposes with the objectives of education and upbringing. No wonder, the botanical garden was named of N. Grishko – for his enormous contribution to this.
Grishko’s successor, as the director worked with inspiration on preparing the garden for mass attendance. And in 1964 the Garden hospitably opened its gate for citizens and the guests of our Capital, especially for schoolchildren and students with appropriate referral.
Since 1965 the its leadership takes Andrey Michailovich Grodzinski. His strategy was in expanding the research, and thanks to his efforts, the garden is transformed into a Research Institute. The garden gets international recognition and comes to a new level of its development.
